Backside 180 Kickflip

Difficulty Level: IntermediateTail

The Blind Rotation Flip

The Backside 180 Kickflip, or Backside Flip, combines a backside 180-degree ollie with a kickflip. It is often considered more difficult than the Frontside Flip because the rotation is "blind," meaning you lose sight of your landing for a moment.

🎯 Trust Your Instincts

Landing a Backside 180 Kickflip is a testament to your board control and commitment. It is a highly respected trick that looks incredibly stylish, especially when done smoothly down gaps or on transition.

👟 Foot Positioning & Weight Distribution

1. Front Foot Position

Place your front foot further up on your board than a regular kickflip, angled with your toes pointing slightly forward. This gives you more control and helps you stay over the board.

2. Back Foot Position

Your back foot should be on the toe-side edge of the tail. This position is crucial for initiating the backside rotation when you pop.

1

1. Wind Up Your Shoulders

Before you pop, wind up your shoulders in the opposite direction of the spin. As you bend down, twist your upper body. This pre-rotation is what will generate the momentum for the 180 spin.

2

2. Pop and Unleash the Spin

With your shoulders wound up, pop the tail straight down. As you pop, unleash the stored energy by turning your shoulders and hips in the direction of the spin.

3

3. The Light Flick

As the board comes up, give it a light and quick flick with your front foot. Unlike other flips, a hard flick can send the board out of control. The goal is a gentle nudge to initiate the flip.

4

4. Aim for 90 Degrees and Catch

Focus on turning just 90 degrees and catching the board with your back foot. Your body will naturally complete the remaining 90 degrees of rotation. For a stylish finish, catch it with your back foot first.

💡

Golden Tip!

The secret is a light flick and proper body positioning. Press your weight down on the heel-side while leaning your body over the toe-side. Wind up your shoulders before you pop, and flick lighter than you think you need to.

⚠️ Common Mistakes

⚠️

Board shoots out in front: You are likely leaning too far back. Focus on keeping your body leaned over the toe-side of the board.

⚠️

Not completing the 180 rotation: Wind up your shoulders before the pop and really commit to turning your head and hips.

⚠️

Flicking too hard: This causes the board to over-rotate or fly away. Use a lighter, quicker flick than a standard kickflip.

⚠️

"Chicken foot" (landing with only one foot): This is a commitment issue. Trust the rotation and force yourself to land with both feet.
