Varial Heelflip

Difficulty Level: IntermediateTail

A mix of a Frontside Pop Shuvit and a Heelflip.

The Varial Heelflip combines the frontside 180-degree rotation of a Frontside Pop Shuvit with the lengthwise rotation of a Heelflip. It is a stylish trick that is a bit more difficult than its kickflip counterpart.

👟 Foot Positioning

1. Front Foot Position

Place your front toe right along the toe-side edge of the board. For beginners, hanging your toe off a bit can make it easier, but placing it on the edge gives you more pop and control. The goal is to put pressure on the ball of your foot on this edge.

2. Back Foot Position

Position your back foot in the inner pocket of the tail (the concave area of the tail on your toe-side), similar to a frontside shuvit. This position is crucial for getting the pop and scoop needed for the rotation.

1

Bend and Balance

Bend down super far to get all your weight on your toes. Keep your shoulders square and parallel with the board, and stay centered. Before popping, look down at your front toe.

2

Pop and Scoop

Pop with your back toe and give it a slight scoop. This initiates the frontside shuvit rotation. Without the scoop, the board won't rotate fully.

3

Flick with Your Toe

Just after the board starts to rotate, flick with your front toe off the edge of the board. Do not use your heel. This flick gives the board its heelflip rotation and helps guide it.

4

Tuck and Catch

After flicking, tuck your legs up toward your chest to give the board room to rotate. Watch for the griptape and catch the board with your feet, landing over the bolts.

💡

Golden Tip!

The secret to the Varial Heelflip is to flick with your toe, not your heel. Put most of your weight on your front toes, scoop slightly with the back foot, and then flick your front foot out. After the flick, tuck your legs up to let the board complete its rotation.

⚠️ Common Mistakes

⚠️

Board doesn't rotate the full 180: Your back foot isn't scooping enough. Make sure to pop and scoop slightly from the inner pocket of the tail.

⚠️

Board doesn't flip: You're not flicking correctly. Remember to flick with your toe, not your heel, off the front edge of the board.

⚠️

Board is not level before popping: If you lean too much on your heels or toes, you will lose pop. Keep the board flat and balanced.

⚠️

Not enough pop: Bend your knees way down before the pop to get maximum height.
